Thanks to Elisabethan I am 99.9% certain that this is an early tintype of two actors from a theatrical performance of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde shortly after the book was published.

Phil, I think I know. I've seen an old poster for Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde where two caracters does the same pose! I found the poster again by looking at our version of Wikipedia and writing Dr. Jekyll. See what you think. Maybe these men are from a teather company?

Unfortunately, the "story" is often lost in these antique images. Of course it is fun to speculate on what it all meant!

Phil, I am not a photograph expert so I have no idea the exact age of the tintype but I think the book came out in the 1886 so I assume this would be from one of the first performances!
I'd date it from about 1870s- 90s.
Being a loose tintype (no case or indications of being cased) puts it as post Civil War. Not much to the backdrop and the clothing is not very discernable in the image, so it would be tough to put it into a tighter timeframe.

No problem Elisabethan. I agree! I'm not sure if you've seen it on Wikipedia but there is a cabinet photo with a similar image where the man in front is almost in the identical pose.
No I don't think I saw that, I will look for it :-). This is really interesting, how did you find the Tintype? I wonder where it was taken, any ideas about location? What country?
Thanks for all the help Elisabethan I purchased it at a flea market in New England (USA) a couple days ago. It was mixed in with a bunch of other antique photos.

Yes! This is by far the best photo I've found amongst other "average" old photos.
