Many people have looked this over and I cannot get a definitive answer as to what it is, who the manufacturer was, and the date of origin.
All hinges are cast iron and numbered uniquely. Top and bottom are wood, oak is the consensus. Hand-pinstriped in black and yellow.
Measures roughly 14"L x 5"W x 9" to top of cast crown on lid.

Box for a wood planer......but the dividing piece throws me off that
I have been following this to see the comments. The drain hole in the bottom is interesting as are the two compartments. In the last picture, what you call a crown looks like a nor'easter to me.
We appreciate the feedback. We've had this in the hands of no less than 40 collectors, enthusiasts, auctioneers, and old farm guys. We still don't have an exact answer.
I saw a meat slicer from 1883 the other day that had a very similar style of cast iron and pin-stripping. Horse drawn implement tool box? Consensus is the hole in the bottom is for mounting purposes... maybe.
We think also the location of the divider and the cast crown are where an oil can may sit.
You are probably right and an interesting theory. Oil can, glass bottle or plastic bottle always drip no matter if you wipe them down. Wood soaks up oil and you can't remove it. I don't see any indication of oil residue. If the hole in the bottom was for mounting I doubt someone would put a grommet in the hole.

This is definitely a farm implement tool box. The doom was to protect the spout of an oil can. The lack of oil on the wood base only means the user didn't use a can or was very neat. The grommet was used to add strength to the bottom when the bolt attached to a draw bar. Very nice piece, any interest in selling? Thanks.
