Any thoughts on what this motor or machine was used for would be appreciated.
The motor appears on an 1880s- 90s cabinet card that was photographed by Wheat out of Rockford, IL.
Any help or thoughts on the cabinet card are appreciated.

Don't know what the thing is but I like the cab overall.
Probably a factory motor. A leather belt ran on the pulley to a line shaft that could operate a number of machines.

I think that might be a belt driven dynamo for producing electricity from a steam engine.

I reason with Rustfarm. The pulley could be driven by a motor or the pulley could be driving a generator. They basically look the same, especially back then.
Pretty confident it's a generator...

early generator of electricity. the power source drove the pulley in front . probably steam powered or even water if right conditions .. i.e a waterwheel .
oops and also wind if a good windmill at hand

Oops, I left out Rustfarm for credit in my last comment. Not in my bag of marbles, but as I remember about old style motors vs generators, it just which side of the "E gap" the brushes are located on to make the difference so you can't really tell by a pic of the outside.
