i picked this up on ebay the other day for around $20. a gift for my sister. i like these classic shapes - particularly handled vases. the colors are pretty nice on this piece too.

I have a question totally unrelated to your post, but I know you will be able to help me.
I just purchased a small hand thrown stoneware pot, which has three holes around the circumference for hanging ( It is domed, so does not sit upright). The inside is unglazed.
Should I hang it with those clip on chain type hooks or a natural hemp type material?
There is no hole for drainage, so how do I keep it well drained. I’m not very good with indoor plants, so would prefer it outside.
hi maryh1956. the hemp rots pretty quickly, and usually leads to the pot breaking, so i prefer to use a chain of some type - preferably brass, copper, stainless steel or something which doesn't rust. most plants need good drainage which means you need a hole. i tend to drill a lot of pots to give them drainage, but you can' t really do that to high quality or collector pottery. some people place a plastic pot inside of the pottery, but in order to maintain drainage, you need to empty all the water out a little while after you water - which is a pain. some tropical and indoor plants don't need really good drainage, but you have to be careful not to water them much or you'll get rot and a stinky mess. there are some nice hanging cacti which do well w/ just a light spritz on a regular basis, which would solve the problem too. i use almost all california native plants now, although i have some experience w/ lots of other plants too. best of luck!
Thanks for the info. I live in the Northeast, outside Washington DC, so maybe I will do as you suggest and use cacti and keep it indoors. I might put a few annuals in it as a test.
