I purchased this chest many years ago at a garage sale. It's very heavy, has lots of drawers and compartments on the inside. It is marked J.D. Jones, was wondering if anyone knows anything about this type of chest/trunk.

Looks to me like a carpenter's chest. Not just a "tool chest" in that a carpenter's chest was a little higher in quality and a bit more compartmentalized like yours.(imagine a couple of sets of the big wooden planes they had in those back two compartments.) A dowry chest or hope chest usually did not have so many compartments to it. If it was a seaman's chest it would have a lip around the edge to help keep water out and would have brass fittings.... However I am a bit of a novice in this regards and I hope other contributers will help shed some light.... Thank you for the post --it is a very nice chest -- welcome to Collector's Weekly!

T-Man, you just got 10 points for humility/modesty in my book.
