This is for valentino97 who asked to see an example of my photography made with an antique camera. The image shown here was shot and printed in 1980. The camera is an 8 x 10 inch format 1904 Century No. 7 studio camera (posted here on CW). German optics was used; in this case a simple 1890s Voigtlaender brass barrel lens. The multi-second exposure was made using a lens cap (no shutter). The image itself is an 8 x 10 inch contact print; the negative is placed in direct contact with the printing paper.

My apologies for the scan quality, because it shows dust spots and unable to reproduce the full tonal range of the original print. Soft tones often seen in antique prints are possible because early lenses didn’t have transmission coatings that increase contrast. The result is a softer negative capable of capturing subtle nuances of lighting. Then it's all about the paper selection and printing.

“Depth of field” was kept intentionally narrow, meaning that only a couple portions of the image are razor sharp and everything else is intentionally out of focus.

I would LOVE to have a family portrait taken by similar camera and method. The photographs from antique cameras like yours have such character and depth.

Very nice thanks for the link. The soft lens of the 18th century gave enough information to the viewer to motivate their imagination and fell in the blanks. Nice work.John
