As you can see this is a fabulous piece of crystal. It is another that came from the entire contents sale of a local home. This one has very sharp looking gold or copper accents. The top of the lid is slightly sunken which gives it a very unusual look. The pedestal comes mounted to marble and is very ornately trimmed in gold or silver.
Please help me to identify this piece and date it. I also do not know the maker.
    Thanks for all assistance,
    Sandra

this looks like a fairly modern press glass (possibly lead crystal) with some gray cut added. The hobstar motif is very common. The 'construction' of this covered compote looks to be done using two identical bowls with the added pedestal, trim and finial completed by a jobber for import.

I did find one bowl with added cuts around the rim that was listed as Vintage West Germany Hobstar on eBay. There was no mention in the listing of a reference for that attribution, tho' it does seem reasonable.

Thanks TallCakes for the info, but I do not think this is a constructed piece. The top and bottom of each piece does not have the appearance of a bowl. There is no evidence of a foot being on it and the center of each half is recessed slightly to set off the finial and pedestal. The rim on the top piece is cut to fit inside of the brass trim piece.
I am still searching for more info on this piece so wish me luck.

Correction to my first posting, I now believe the decorative metal on this piece is actually brass.

not sure of your understanding of 'constructed' as the joining of dissimilar parts (glass and metal in this case) could be considered 'assembled' by a jobber; in this case glass and metal. Certainly you have the piece in hand and can asses the construction; from your imaged the bottom (closed side) of each piece of glass is flat as in a bowl. From your description the bottom of the bowl is recessed, which is typical. You can find other bowls like the ones used on eBay as I noted previously.

Thank you TallCakes and I apologize for any offense caused by my post. I am new to collecting and I am not as knowledgeable as I would like to be. Still learning from folks like yourself and your comments are appreciated very much.
