    Hello All,
    I've missed you!
I haven't been out shopping much but I did get out today.
    This is the treasure.
I was hoping that someone could tell me something about the design,( what do you suppose it means? )
The red and dark colors are actually inlaid stone, incredible!
    I hope you're all well,
    Tony.

"Scottish" Sterling Silver Brooch. The colord stones are usually agate, they used different stones when making these pins. The little silver circle attached to the back top once held a small chain with a little safety pin, so you couldn't loose the brooch. Very collectable and expensive to buy today. Check eBay scottish pins or brooch. Your pin is missing 3 stones above the crown which would lower the value........ Get it repaired...c. 1850-1900

Sorry...only 2 stones missing from the crown. The stones on crown may be quartz with colored foil behind. Sometimes when gold is used real gem stones will be used.

The darker stone could be blood stone.

also, sara, the darker stone has red inclusions. I'll have to investigate bloodstone.
      Thanks again,
      Tony.

perhaps the X (Roman no. 10) refers to a 10th anniversary of something? A commemorative brooch? Very pretty.

Hello Budek! Google 'St Andrew cross brooch'.
    20. Elisabethan Elisabethan, 10 years ago
St Andrew, patron Saint of Scottland. Is it a tube hinge and a c-clasp? If so it looks - together with style - victorian to me.

Elisabethan, Thank You for the love and for the generous and illuminating comment,
      much appreciated!

Hi Tony. Your brooch is late a late Victorian Scottish brooch. The crown refers to Queen Victoria. She started the Scottish jewellery trend. She spent a lot of time at Balmoral castle. They would go for long walks in the mountains & collect Scottish stones including cairngorms (like citrine but can be quite dark) and have them cut & set into jewellery. The cross is for St Andrew.

Most common are brooches & bracelets but you do see earrings. All set in different agates & sometimes granites, often with vitrines, cairngorms or foiled stones like yours. During the mid Victorian times some of the very best jewellers made this type of jewellery & you can find extremely fine examples. Scottish jewellery was very popular about 10 years ago & fetched really big prices. They are a little less popular now but still quite collectable. I can tell yours is a little later because of the engraving, more Edwardian. Hope that helps.

Thank You for the love, Kevin, and Thank You for all of the wonderful information, Jewels1900, much appreciated! Sorry to bother you, but do you suppose that the small stones set into the crown are foiled glass?
      Thanks,
      Tony.
    25. Jewels1900 Jewels1900, 10 years ago
No worries Tony. The red & green will defiantly be blood stone. (Be careful & check these, sometimes the old glue dries up & they fall out). The 3 little stones are probably foiled glasses or small agates (those pinky colours are usually foiled, the agates are usually faceted). Either way, it doesn't affect the value.

The best way to tell is look through the stones horizontally (they look like they are raised a little above the setting) and see if they are clear or not.

Could also be citrine, garnet, and topaz. Maybe purchase a jewellers loop to see if there are any inclusions.

Thank You again, Jewels and Sara, you've been a big help!
