Found two McCoy pieces at a tent sale today that just sprang up in the vacant lot next to my favorite Chinese buffet. They couldn't be more different and I thought putting them together shows McCoy's design evolution over the years until they closed in 1982. They definitely had a sense of humor and knew what the public wanted. The "Have A Happy (why not"nice"...copyright thing ?) Day" cookie jar is from the late 60's early 70's while the "Scottie" planter is a 40's design. They are both clearly marked and I really didn't think the cookie jar was even McCoy until I turned it over. I keep forgetting they did lots of cookie jars over the years. The Scottie planter is my favorite since I have my own little Scottie girl. It's surprising that there is no damage to the delicate ears at all, but there is a hairline crack down the back of the planter. The cookie jar is perfect. It better be for the price I paid as I could only get a couple of dollars off for buying a few other things. She was a very nice older lady along with her two sons. We talked for quite a bit. Maybe I'll go back tomorrow. -Mike-

More info on McCoy here they have a very diverse and interesting history.

Awesome! I use the Happy Day jar in my kitchen. Adds that pop. Think you'll be surprised how much they go for...

Thanks Amber :) It was marked eighteen but I got it for fifteen so I think I did well. I've seen a wide range of values. Depends on the black paint quality or whether the top is missing or not. Mine seems pretty much perfect. A tiny scratch and paint loss to one of the letters though.

      FAB!!
Love this McCoy stuff....it's pretty new to me and I don't see it here.

Thanks Karen :) I don't have a lot and I think next to Shawnee and maybe Roseville or Weller (expensive sometimes) it's what everyone collects here in the US if you're into art pottery. Living in Ohio where all these companies were based you'd think there would be more to be had but it still requires a bit of hunting to find the good pieces at the right price.

      What's your favourite collectables Mike?
    10. mikelv85 mikelv85, 10 years ago
Thanks Anne.....Well I do have pretty eclectic tastes, but I really loving finding any of the great art pottery pieces and Chinese porcelain. Vases and sculpture have always been my favorites. All art work too paintings or prints. Pretty much anything that catches my eye. I love furniture but transportation and space keep that well in check...lol.
