This is an absolutely gorgeous silver plate serving bowl having a beautiful, ornate foliate handle decorated with applied berries and delicate leaves. The outer edge of the bowl is deeply fluted with decorative channels running vertically. I was told that this was for serving fresh berries on one side and the other was for a custard sauce or stiff sweet whipped cream. It is stamped underfoot SIMPSON HALL MILLER & CO., and I believe it was made circa 1895 - 1904. I have tried doing some research but have been able to find anything similar to this piece. Does anyone know if it really was used for serving berries and whipped cream or if it has a completely different use. Would anyone be able to give me an idea of it's value? All help would be greatly appreciated.

    Beautiful silverplate basket!

Unfortunately, silverplate has never had a great collector following. I think it is really undervalued and collect it myself.

    Thanks for sharing,

    Scott
