    i purchased this old bonsai pot along w/ another one i'll post next just before leaving california on my vacation. now i'm in NH/VT thinking about what to plant in them when i return to california!

      If I were back in VT/NH I would look for a butternut seedling and use it. If you are close to Bennington monument as you go around it look to your right. You will see one of the only Ginko trees in VT. If you ask they may let you take a cutting. This is the time of year to do it. Get new growth.

      It is an oriental tree that was introduced to the U.S.A. years ago but difficult to grow. The male and female trees are easy to tell at the right time of the year. They make fun bonsai projects but are difficult to get started. If you get one going and pinch it properly you have a money maker. I happen to know the one in Bennington first hand. University of Vermont sent a professor down there to examine it because nobody believed it would grow in Vermont. The doctor that originally owned the property died several years ago and I have no idea who owns it now.

      ginkoes are easy and smelly in the east bay where i live. i've been growing only cal natives for the past 10 yrs or so. manzanitas cannot be bonsai'd the normal way, but i've been figuring out how to grow them as dwarves and it's sometimes rewarding:
