Would anyone know what this is? Picked this up at a garage sale. It is made of wood with a brass lock. Maybe it could have been used as a gun rack? Or perhaps it was used for fishing gear? Anyway going to strip the paint and re stain it.

I think this has been cut down and modified. The back is out of place with the door which looks original as do the hinges and sides. I think the original cupboard would have been much deeper (front to rear). It looks like an old pantry canning cupboard that was modified. The back is totally wrong in terms of the secondary wood used and the combination of woods. Probably a frugal (or poor) person using what they had to make what they needed. I am willing to bet the door is worth more than the entire thing (depending on your location).

@ fhrj what do you mean by "The back is out of place with the door" ?
    3. fhrjr2 fhrjr2, 10 years ago
The back is mixed wood and runs left to right. That contradicts the age along with the coloration of the pieces used. This would have probably had poplar as the secondary wood or perhaps pine but it wouldn't have been mixed dimension. This has 1x4 up to 1x8 or 10 all combined. That didn't happen.

I think the cabinet is in the wrong orientation & I only see two widths of boards alternating wide & narrow. The Ogee edge profile on the right should be the base.

I think if you set a rifle or shotgun in this the door won't close, same for a fishing pole with reel on it. It has eye hooks on the bottom and left (hinge side) stile as well as the top of the door. I assume they were used to keep something from falling out when the door was opened. I might believe it was used to store something like bamboo for repairing fishing rods etc. The interior uprights have been sanded down so they wouldn't scratch or damage what ever was between them. It is certainly an odd and interesting cabinet.

What are the dimensions of the cabinet, include the depth?
    10. charmsomeone charmsomeone, 10 years ago
walksoftly not sure of the dimensions as it is in a new home.
