This is just an observation about these trunks -- I have seen many of them on the market in various sizes and shapes and they are indeed handmade and look wonderful. The green on the outside tells me it has been spray painted for effect -- unless the whole thing is made out of copper or metal. If there is green on the metal it would be from the corrosion of the salt from the sea but if it is on the wood then it is very suspect. I know there are others on this site who would know more about this type of trunk and I hope they can help clarify age.

The "truck" carriage wheels & axle housing are pre 1830's style & the rusted portions look very convincing. Truly old trunks etc. are sometimes "doctored-up" & this appears to be one of those by what I see. T-Mon, you seem to know nails, rivets etc. fairly well. What do you think? The rusted thru metal in pic #2 is in the right place & looks natural to me. My opinion is that it is a doctored-up original.

It's so cool I wish I knew more about it .. I do appreciate all the info .. It looks to me like it belongs in a museum

trunkman knows trunks so there may not be much more to know. It's a great item but you should know that just because something is old doesn't mean it is worth a fortune. Do you collect antiques?
    8. Familyclark Familyclark, 10 years ago
Not looking for a fortune ? .. Just wanted to know more about it. :) .. I have antiques that were passed down to me and several pieces in my house ( furniture ) I love the antique look. I have more pieces that aren't worth much in anything but I like them.

I keep coming back to this piece trying to understand it. There are some signs of genuine age and wear. The similar pieces I have seen have been on a smaller scale. The size of this suggests that it would be too large to be made for decorative use. The replicas are spray painted green for effect but perhaps they are mimicking what a real old chest looked like. On the corner piece of the second picture the wear is exactly what you would like to see on an older piece. So I am leaning towards it being an older piece but due to many replicas out there I am a little unsure. I hope some others can weigh in -- BB2 I agree with you in that there is natural wear on this chest.

One more link for info -- http://www.collectorscorner.co.in/antique-chests.html,
so stylistically it appears to be Malaysian and consistent with construction and form. You can do a bit more sleuthing now that you have a trail to follow...

Thanks trunkman I did see that one ..so there are some similar things yet it's still very different. It doesn't look as big, it's not on wheels and it doesn't open to the middle . I posted more pictures .. I have a ton of pictures I do agree if it was made more recently as a decorative piece .. Well that just doesn't make sence it's way to big and it was defiantly used. I think " maybe " someone tried to restore or preserve it at some point. I m completely memorized by its detail and beauty. Interesting how all the hard wear was attached. My husband and I talked last night and we both want to keep it but it's so big I can't put it anywhere and I have 4000 sq house.. Thats why I can't imagine a trunk being made this big for decoration.

I can post more pictures of some of the damage spots

      IMHO, it is not right.

The Blue (tarnish) is on wood when it should be on the metal. Wheels that would be 200 years old would be worn more from use. In pic 3 where the metal straps hang down, there is no wear from years and years of moving it. There is no wear on where the strap go over the U shaped lock. This would show wear from banging around, and from being opened and closed. The places where it is damaged is made to look too damaged in certain areas. The top eyelets of the metal straps show no wear -- and that should be a sure place that wear would be from movement of any source. The places where there should be sure-fire wear, there is none.....yet it is tarnished all over from age, even on the wood ?. Something very old should show wear in places of movement.

Do not get me wrong. I not saying it not old (maybe 1970's) or so, but I do not believe it is 200 years old.

This is just my opinion, and I do not know that much -- but I would expect wear (real wear) and worn scratches on the hinges from being opened and closed.....That's all.....yet I see none. Yet everywhere else it is distressed. So the obvious places there should be -- I do not see. Paint and rust and tarnish should be missing from around those metal heavy strap.

anyways -- Just my opinion, and I can be 100% wrong too, just going by my observations.

It is pretty and makes a Nice decor piece, and has character most of all. Still beautiful!!!!

      ...............??

Just wondering if my other comment was Deleted? As I see it is Gone?

I was just saying in *My own opinion* I do not see wear where there should be. The heavy top would make marks in the wood from wear and tear of opening a heavy top. The top caster wheels look old, yet no wear below them. Just what I think and feel....as all here to learn.
