I am a novice about Bohemian glass. I am, however, a collector/researcher of Victorian-era fairy lamps and always try to confirm an attribution. Many British and some Bohemian examples are documented, but there are many lamps that remain a mystery.

Recent Show-n-Tell examples lead me to think this fairy lamp ("candle lamp" to be more precise) may be Welz. But, understanding that attribution is often very difficult without documentation, I would ask experts in this this forum to offer an opinion to a Welz attribution. Of course, a positive attribution is always welcome.

For size appreciation, the shade on this lamp is only 2.25 inches in diameter.

    Jim.

Jim, what a beautiful example of Welz in the rainbow honeycomb decor. Your lamp is just gorgeous - really a wonderful piece of glass.

      Thank you Michelleb007.

It sure looks like Welz to me, but I have not handled enough to be confident in the attribution. While the glass type is a good lead, I would really like some catalog evidence that Welz actually made candle lamps.

I have several other examples of mottled glass similar to other Welz pieces that I would like an opinion on, including an unusual candy cane stripe. I'll post those shortly.

      Thanks again,
      Jim

Agree with others-- looks like an example of Welz decor.

Welzebub no longer posts-- should be able to contact him through his fantastic web site:

Thank you Scott. I am a regular visitor to the website....trying to learn what I can. It is what lead me to believe the lap is Welz.

Since there are no candle lamps on the website, I think they may be receptive to including some of Bohemian lamp collection. Stay tuned.

Probably so. Craig Orkney runs the site. He is a great guy with unbelievable knowledge and dedication to documenting Bohemian glass. His methodical analysis and research has been especially enlightning with Welz.

Hi IMAsapp, what an unusual lamp, I've never seen anything like it. Lovely. Agree wholeheartedly with Scott's comment above. Kralikglass is a fantastic site & Craig's helped me out numerous times.

Methodical analysis and research usually requires some sort of documentation as a start point. There are no known Welz catalogs. There have been no Welz labels found on anything even remotely similar to this lamp, either by shape or decor. If Welz manufactured everything currently being attributed to Welz, there would be more documentation somewhere.

A related decor is attributed to Harrach by the museum in Passau. Another related decor has been found with a Ruckl manufacturers label. I agree with Jim and think it's best to find catalog evidence that Welz actually made candle lamps prior to calling it Welz. Prior to finding such documentation, Welz would not be my first guess.

I will post as often as possible at the risk of boring others of "fairy lamp talk." That said, all who love glass will enjoy the collection, regardless of the form.

I will certainly let you know when I contact Craig. However, since I live in the mountains of Colorado with our short summer season, there seems to be little time to do the things your really enjoy. Yesterday, however, was the Burro race.....now, that was really fun for everyone except the Burros. :-)

I would agree that this is Welz production in the Harlequin Honeycomb decor. This particular décor has not been successfully linked to any other production house that I am aware of. It does appear on several shapes I consider to be markers for Welz production.

      Cool piece!!

Related decors have been found with Ruckl labels, not Welz.
