Here is a piece that has me stumped. Van Briggle is usually my thing but I fell for this and have been trying to ID it ever since. It has been suggested it might be Heliosine or Zsolnay . It stands 4”. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I believe Zsolnay is always marked. but I could be wrong . this look very French to me . But I m sure I could be wrong. its a stunning vase!! LOVE IT :)

Most Zsolnay is marked with an series of numbers (usually 3 or 4) which related to a form book design. That number is a chronological number relating to a production date. Example: an incised form number 782 indicated a production between 1873 and 1882; an incised form number 6105 indicates a production year for 1900.

I believe to be Heliosine, but not sure because , there pottery was marked as well . so this has to be something then.
A dear friend had an incredible antique store in Chicago. On a few occasions he would take off for Palm Springs and I would open the store two days a week for him. He had several, 7-10 of these pieces. They were always unmarked but always with the same glaze and always lacking the brown interior/under glaze of Heliosine Ware. He told me he picked them all up in France where he kept a small apartment. He was very well versed in antique pottery and he never learned the maker. I know that doesn't help much but he bought his over 45-50 years ago.

Hi, Mac. Sorry for not getting back to you earlier. These Heliosine-like pieces, I strongly believe, did originate in Germany/Bohemia rather than France. Britain remains a slight possibility, but my general feel is that they originate from father West in Europe. I base my suspicions on the strong similarity of the glaze to Heliosine Ware and in the general Jugendstil/Secessionist type forms that one finds these pieces. Every once in a while you will find one with thick copper Secessionist type overlay that was popular in Germany/Bohemia at the time, as well, which reinforces my suspicions. Sorry. Wish I knew more, but I will certainly keep an eye out. Cheers, J.
