This pair of dinner plates were chosen by my youngest son, the one with me in the picture, he is a special boy with a big intuition about British Victorian table ware. He has a big collection of caroceros (small dishes to put the bone of the olive after eating it). As the plates are “fully unmarked” they were very cheap, though who sold them is one of the more conspicuous dealers. The plate seem identical at first glance but when looking more carefully one notice that butterflies and insects are different. The Aesthetic movement, was very influenced by Japonisme. In these plates the motive the central motive, a bird on a leaf with surrounding insects and flowers was one of the commonest themes.(picture 3 from http://www.harvardartmuseums.org/art/142258 and 4 from http://www.gratitudegallery.com/galleries/japanese-prints/birds/ ). The Aesthetic Movement is a loosely defined movement in literature, fine art, furniture, metalwork, ceramics, and wallpapers in later nineteenth-century Britain. The Aesthetic Movement argued that art was not supposed to be utilitarian or useful in any practical sense. Instead, aesthetic experience is a fully autonomous and independent aspect of a human life. http://buffaloah.com/f/fstyles/aes/aes.html, Although not marked I bet they are from England and from about 1880 and because of the good quality of the blanks and transfer Spode, but I will be gratefull for any other idea.
