In the late 19th century, photographic studios employed artists to provide touch up work and tinting to images.

When images were enlarged, often details were lost in the process. This particular view shows an enlarged (16" X 20" print) that has been made from a cabinet card. The artist can be seen holding the original cabinet card in his hand.

The artist is identified on the back as "Gunnar Larson" with the studio mark of "Barry & Larson, Minneapolis, MN". I am not sure if the artist is related to the studio partner.

Reproduction of these images in any way is prohibited.

Thanks shareurpassion-- I suspect it too, but don't have any proof YET.

Suprisingly (to me) "Gunnar" was a fairly popular name at this time in MN.
