If you search for it as a fireplace screen you will never find it. Fireplace screens were normally made of a brass mesh material and they prevented burning embers from popping out into the room. This item is made of wood and if anything to do with a fireplace it is a summer front. You see when the fireplace wasn't in use everything from rats to bats would come down the chimney and into the house. Most old fireplaces didn't have a damper that closed so people stuffed rags up the smoke box and boarded off the opening to keep vermin out. That looked pretty ugly so someone invented the summer front to place in the front of the fireplace. This one isn't terribly old but could be rolled away so the fireplace could be used and yet it appeared to be a piece of furniture.

Thank you for your response. Yes of course that makes perfect sense.
      I really hadn't considered that.
You say it may not be very old. I am told last half of the nineteenth centuary.
      What would you say
