Very large ornate trunk in original condition. Located this in an antique shop when I was on vacation, my eyes were bigger than my car so had to return a few weeks after and pick it up. Did a five hour road trip to get this beautiful trunk to add to my growing collection. The leather is worn and missing in a lot of places, I plan on removing the old leather and refinishing the wood. The interior is original needs some repairs and a drawer needs to be replaced but overall in great condition for the age. A label inside says it was made by Schmit Bros Co. Not sure what to do with all of the metal on this the lock plate looks like brass so will clean that up but the cast metal pieces hate to paint them but want to clean them up a little. Looking for some pointers on the best way to clean those. Need to replace the cardboard that covers the center part of the tray, any suggestions on where to get material to do that with.

Kathy, amazing trunk! Great find. If you call me I will explain in detail how to do what needs to be done to your trunk. I would type it, but way too much work.

Fantastic trunk. I would do as little as possible to it. Great as is.

Stunning ! Took me a few moments to stop drooling. I would be torn as to -1. Leave it alone. 2. Keep the leather on and repair/replace the bad sections) or door
#3. Expose the wood underneath. It might take me at least a week of gawking at in the back yard to decide which way to go.
I'm sure you will do a wonderful job on a fabulous find. Yes! call Jim he would know best. Good luck and happy trunking

Jim thanks I would love to chat with you and get advice on fixing up this trunk. I've seen your work, it is amazing what you do to restore these pieces of history. I will give you a call for some tips, is there a time of day or day of the week that that works better for you?

Fabulous trunk! I had a nice trunk with the exact same unusual lock a couple years ago, but sold it. You probably know that you don't find too many trunks with such ornate hardware and beautiful interiors as this. It could have been the "bride trunk" model and is a high quality trunk. Thanks TrunkerMarvin I love the trunk and will keep this one in my collection and pass on to my daughter someday. I haven't done anything to it yet. I had lots of small projects to work on over the winter, something this big I need to work on outside.

This is such a fabulous trunk -- still drooling with Drill -- to replace the center lid -- I took one of my side pieces in and had it coloured photocopied for a buck or two and then simply white glued it on to a piece of wood and a perfect match -- you can enlarge the scale of the print to match the size of the missing piece... taking a photo of the center piece and doing the same also works...
