I am hoping these are Amber, but I don't know. I was told if you put them in salt water and they float, then yes, they would be Amber. But how much salt? If you put just about anything in salt water and there's enough salt, whatever it is would float, wouldn't it?

Are these prayer beads? I'm thinking that because of the knotted thread?
Therefore, it would not go under the category of jewelry, or would it?

If you see red on them, it's because someone stuck them in a drawer with a red marker!!! So, I did try to get the marker off and at that point when I rubbed hard or long enough, the cloth was a bit yellow. Would that not make it Bakelite???

The smallest bead here is about 1/2" graduating to 5/16ths" on one of the strands.

Thanks for any help you can offer :)

I think more likely bakelite. They have that "carved" look and colour.

There are some simple tests for bakelite so Google it and try to ID it from testing.
The yellow on the cloth is a good indicator - did it smell a bit like ether when you did that?
I'm thinking just a necklace, knotted so a break didn't mean beads everywhere, but I am no jewelry expert.

Wait a bit - some of the really knowledgeable will help!!!

Thanks racer and val. I do have a good sense of smell but not for this? I have no idea what it supposed to smell like...and the last time I smelled ether...LOL, I can't remember!!! (JK)

I wish I could describe it better...I'll take it to a friend at PCC and let you know-I forgot about her till now. Thanks. Tell ya on Monday!

Apparently some dealers do taste it ;)

The salt test ratios are listed as well.

It is beautiful color ! I have no idea how you test but from what I just learned if they smell like ether and taste like salt I might not wear it :-) ether is old way to knock you out . I had it once and you also get sick when you come too. So the salt may help with getting your electrolytes back from being sick to stomach :-)

Hi, don't know the material but this far I have seen this teardropshapebeads in bakelite.
      http://m.ebay.com/itm?itemId=111422424013#.
But a lot om bakelite was made in order to look like amber so who knows? Lovely it is in any case, this necklace of yours.

Just take a bowl fill it with water to the half... add salt untill it stops dissolving and a rest of salt is still visible at the bottom...
Then put your necklace into it
