I found this in the trash near my house the other day - along w/ lots of interesting stuff [mask, art books, etc]. I don't think it's very old, but it sure is well-made!

The tile looks old to me, the frame is nicely carved and the back is not cheesy.

it's a good question racer4four. i could be wrong, but when i see splits in the center of the bottom piece, and the not tight corners, along w/ the stain and the number on the back which appears to be written in magic marker. just a hunch, really...

I would think it is old. I can't tell from the picture, but it looks like the back might be a species of mahogany plywood. I have some framed art from 1890 - 1910-ish that features the same sort of backing. I think a modern piece would have a composite board such as hardboard (masonite) or MDF.

i have some similar items - i think it is a footed tile from 1890 to 1920 with a carved wooden fame. i think these were used as stands for hot items from the kitchen - but could be wrong!
wow! thanks Grisbouche, Sunnybrook, Virginia.vintage! i hope i'm wrong, and you all are right! i do think that it is a trivet for hot items on the table. with the wood, it's 11" square and the tile is 8" square - making it a very large trivet.
i wonder how i can find out for sure?
is this minton transferware?

thank you kyratango! it IS old! i just pulled a piece of the wood off the back and all the little nails are very rusted and square cut nails. wow!
the wood on the back has been replaced at some time which explains the incongruency in age. the tile is some kind of faience - could be french or Minton. it is rare, from what i can dig up. it might have been a musical trivet at one time, but has been converted to a non-musical one, probably when the wood frame back was replaced. these are pretty valuable, from what i can find.
i've been studying up on aesthetic movement transferware tiles, and i think this is Wedgwood - early Victorian 1850s-60s, because of the color and quality. it's blue and cream transferware which Wedgwood was known for. there are also some american companies which used these colors and did similar transferware pieces, so it could also be one of them. one of the really cool things about this tile is the reflective streaks in the glass of the window along w/ the very subtle 'through-the-window' appearance of the doves and branches. these subtle effects are difficult to achieve w/ transferware, but they really did them well in this tile!

thank you melaniej! i was just researching it last night. it is either minton hollins or wedgewood - unusual 8" tile. very finely done details - like the glass reflection and the ornate corners.
I did eventually find out who made this large tile: Sarreguemines. They made some beautiful ceramics!
