These pen and ink drawings were done by my mother during her senior year of high school in 1922. Unfortunately, the originals were kept by the school and eventually disappeared. I do have several of her year books and was able to make some nice scans. It truly was a different world.

An interesting footnote, my mother happened to be ambidexterous. Everyone liked to watch her draw and just flip her pen from one hand to the other.

Very nice work. My youngest is ambidexterous too. Very frustrating when he was little he took two hands to make one letter.

Absolutely beautiful, so sad that the originals were lost by the school. They are gorgeous! Your mother was very talented and beautiful!

Beautiful drawings your mother was a very talented artist has she drawn anymore scetches besides these? It's ashame the school didn't take better care of them or even offered them back to her! thanks for sharing!

Doodlebug, forgive me for taking so long to respond. Every so often I get burried in my work and don't check my emails! (I've lost a few friends that way.) Thank you for your nice comment. My mother was going to go to Berkeley to study architecture when she was injured in an automobile accident--her back was broken. It took her 5 to 6 years to recover and she chose to marry rather than pursue a career. She never went back to drawing.

That is to bad she hurt her back. I know how she feels because I have had 4 back surgeries & it is painful each & every day! Your Mom was very talented & I'm sure that you treasure each & every drawing she made! I wish she would of continued to draw wether or not she went to school but raising a family takes most of ones time.

Doodlebug, I am so sorry to hear about your back surgeries. That is very serious. The irony of my mom's situation was that she married a man who was very quiet and never made any demands on her, but he turned out to have a very bad heart. When he died she had a teenage and a baby to care for and provide for--her life was very difficult and very hard.

Your mother was very gifted. These are fabulous. They remind me of the illustrator Kay Nielsen's work.
