I believe this is a antique match holder. It has an outline of an elephant on both sides with a leaf beneath. I think it could have come from India. It is quite old, and was found in basement of a very old house. It must be at least seventy to one hundred years old. The woman lived there all her life and it was her parents, and grandparents home. She was in her ninety's when she died and was spinster, so I think it was her father or grandfathers.
It would be nice to know what it is and where it came from.

I agree with you that it appears to be a match safe. I think I see a knurled area on the bottom for striking the matches?
