My boyfriend found this trunk on the side of the road. Now, we know it is not in great shape but we thought it was a great piece of Americana. Anyways .... Wondering a few things .... Hoping someone can help ?

Age of trunk? Era/Area of origin?
    Is it restorable?
It is canvas covered, do you think taking the canvas off and exposing the inner wood ( that is intact) would be a better idea for this piece?
I am new to the restoring of trunks but would love to take on this endeavor. A fully restored trunk would be a really neat keepsake to leave my kids.

Opinons? Anyting would be great ! thanks !

Plenty of old trunk people on CW, so just wait.

Early 1900's flat top trunk. Great project trunk -- yes take off the canvas, wet it well with a soaking cloth and us an exacto knife to cut along the edges, and keep wetting and use a scraper to take off any residual glue. (should find step by step on web) The wood slats have water damage so I would use dark stain on them. You can steel wool the metal parts and repaint or use gun oil -- one side looks pretty bad so I would go the repaint route... I prefer satin black rust paint. With zero investment you cannot lose and it will look tons better refinished,,, here is an example of what it can look like when finished... http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/62627-my-trunk-that-needed-help-got-it-trunk
