A nice pair of field glasses. Text in the extended scope reads "Day and Night: field and marine" I believe they are from around the 1870's. The text in the eyepiece is "La Merveille: Paris". I don't know much about these. I found them under the seat of a 1958 car I bought from an old yard. Some of the leather is still holding on. The optics are quite good, they can still be used.

    Thanks,
    Murray.

      Nice binos!

What is the Boer War connection?

      Hey Scott:
I'm not sure of the connection. The only other pair I've seen with "Day and Night: field and marine"and"La Merveille: Paris" were said to be from the Boer War era. (They are in a museum)

Many countries used French optics. While it could have been used during the Boer War, it is certainly not exclusive to that use or conflict.

In fact, I have seen ones similar to this that have documented use by the USN as late as WW1.

Even if these are WW1, I 'm still thrilled with the history of them. They are, by far, the most antique item I own.
      Thanks for the information,
      Murray.

Sorry to confuse-- these field glass do look to be 19th century.

The USN was short on optics during WW1, so the Navy solicited loans of ANY useable optics for the war effort. I have seen optics as early as the American Civil War loaned and used.

Without documentation, I would call them 19th century. They MAY have been used in the US Indian Wars/ SAW/ Boer War/ WW1.....
