So I was given this box by my mother in law who is in her 60's who states it came from her mother's collection and had old doll furniture in it. It's been sitting in an attic for about 40 years. It's in excellent shape. Looks like there was a label affixed to the top which has obviously fallen off. When I've done research all I can find are pantry boxes but none like this shape and size. She had no idea what it was used for previously. I can't seem to make out the label on the end. Thanks in advance! Hope someone can help me!!

The pictures are too blurry to see much of the fasteners or overlap of the wood. Might have been made in or reproduction of bent wood boxes made in Norway. You didn't give any dimensions so I guess it really isn't that important to you.

The box meaures 18 x 12 x 4. And the pictures were taken with a very nice camera and not blurry at all. It is important to me that's why I put in on here. Wow thought this would be a nicer group of people!

Thank you for removing my comment about dating writing on box . I am not sure why you removed it ?

Photo #3 is the only one that comes up clear. I would direct your attention to the evenly spaced pock marks on the interior walls. Normally those don't show as the inside would have been run through a sanding process to eliminate the pocks. The only machine I know of that might have left those marks would be a field drum machine. The wood went through rollers like a wringer for a washing machine. Only with wood one roller had little nubs to get traction to pull the wood through. If the tension was set too tight the nubs left indentations in the surface of the wood. The machine commonly used low pressure steam to soften the wood so it would bend. I have only ever seen two such machines but the pock marks and the fasteners are probably your best bet to date this.

Manikin I did not delete your comment- if I did it was purely by accident. What was your question. Thank you fhrjr2! Very helpful information. My mother in law was about to throw it in the trash! It's a really cool old piece.

Hi, to me it looks like a primitive bentwood box. I have never seen this shape, the ones I've seen have been round. Nice box!

Is there a way to submit more photos?

Hi, you can remove these and add different photos because it only allows four, or you could make another posting, like a part 2 :)
