I found this cup and saucer recently and it intrigued me. I remember that my grandmother had at some china similar to this cup but it was not made in Japan.

The cup looks "normal" until one raises it and light shines through. Then it reveals an image of a geisha. I think this makes an interesting conversation piece!

There is no mark on the bottom of the cup because this would interfere with the image of the geisha. The saucer, however, is marked with the words Mori China, a Japanese character, and Made in Japan.

I didn't find too much on Mori but I believe that the cup was made around the 1950's.

    Thanks for looking:)

shareurpassion, I agree with you. One can get quite a shock when someone is looking out of a cup. Maybe they should do that for whiskey glasses too:)

hi freiheit, my sister has the exact same set!! she was told it was Japanese 50s/60s , I think its so cool !
whilst on holiday I bought a set of shot glasses from a Chinese restaurant which are totally clear , but when you put any liquid in an image appears in the bottom!!
they used these after a meal as a thank you !! a drink for free!!
it was a shock for our teenage boys to see a naked image in a glass especially when one of them was a man!!! lol ,
im not sure how it works but its very clever, I asked if they would sell me some and they hunted about and managed to find twelve that they could let me have.
I would list them but not sure if c/w would allow it ;-]

How amazing must that be, surfdub66! Thanks for your story about the glasses. I guess if one considers the images as art you might be able to list them. I am sure they would stir up some comments:)

I have a full set of these. Think there is a teapot with it.
My dad was stationed in Singapore in the 60's
