I'm hoping someone will be able to identify this item. It is handcrafted, older (not sure just how old) and looks a bit worn so I'm thinking it was used for something. There's a "handle" to carry it(?) and a "pocket/bin" to hold something but I don't know what?? It is 15"x15", front to back is 6¼", the "pocket" is 6½" deep, the "slats" are 5/8" wide and slits are 7¼" deep.
I didn't know what category to use so just used "Furniture"?!
If anyone has any ideas, please let me know :)

I picked it up at a church thrift store this weekend and the lady there didn't know what it was. Since it was so cheap, I bought it and told her I might be donating it back, depending what I found out about it! BUT, it's a keeper for sure (or maybe a seller ;) !
I did some Googling and am amazed at all of the types and different shapes of these, as well as the history behind it.

Here in Michigan they were used as huckleberry pickers. The one I have from the early 1910s is made of metal.It belonged to my grandfather,they use to go huckleberring and shipped the berries by rail through out the U.S.of A.My Dad told me a good picker could pick 10 cases of 24 quarts of huckleberry's a day.
Not mant things are better eating than a warm huckleberry pie.DO NOT CONFUSE Huckleberry's and Blueberry's.
