I recently purchased 151 pieces of beautiful hand painted china with violets. Majority of items are marked Sango Japan. At least 10 or more are marked Rossetti's Spring Violets Made in Japan. I am confused. I cannot find any mention on the internet that Sango made Spring Violets for Rossetti. Was Rossetti an importer? The mark says Rossetti's Chicago, USA and Made in Japan. My second pic shows 2 identical cups and saucers, one marked Rossetti and the other Sango. The family said a WWII soldier brought the china home for his mother. This must be true as I have never seen rice bowls and sauce dishes in Spring Violets, as shown in the 4th photo. These pieces have no mark. I understand that items not intended for export did not require marking. I have multiples of every possible item they made. The 3rd photo shows four 5 1/2" swirled dishes. Are these ashtrays? I do have a cigarette box marked Rossetti, Made in Occupied Japan. Any info on the relationship between Rossetti and Sango would be appreciated.

From my interest in Japan glass I would say your idea about the two names is likely correct.
Sango is the Japanese manufacturer and Rossetti the importer.
At some stage Rossetti have had Sango produce and back stamp for them. At the same time Sango may have been producing the same pattern for their domestic market, hence the two different backstamps.
I have found it very difficult to find documentation on wholesaler/producer links, although if Rossetti are still around they may have info.
