We bought this masterpiece two years ago to Pablo Gigena, in Córdoba, Argentina. We payed U$ 30.
"Stig Lindberg, 1916-1982, is one of the most renowned Swedish ceramics designers of the 20th century. He joined Gustavsberg in 1937 and became the Artistic Director in 1949. Lindberg designed in other mediums as well including textiles and glass. His work is in the collections of MOMA, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in NY as well as the National Museum, Stockholm". http://www.scandinaviandesign.com/nationalmuseum/0605/
This wonderful dish was first designed for Gustavsberg Sweden in 1952 as part of the iconic REPTIL (or Reptile) series. It is a textured ceramic, made to look like scales.
Though getting more popular, art from the 50's and 60´s was no very desired in their times, so it was very rare to find this item here and with all the original stickers. It has 2 clear impressed marks: the Gustavsberg Sweden and anchor mark, secondly the Reptil mark with the number 264 . As a bonus it also has its original gold and black sticker marked Reptil Carrara 264 Stig L with a Gand . The growing interest on this artist is demonstrated by the newly published book, last picture.

Stunning. At first glance it seems simple, then you look again and it's not, not at all. Hard to believe it was designed 1952.

I think it was much about composition, combining curves and straight lines with rough and smooth surfaces and pale colours. I am from 1956 and my mother is architechte, my father engeneer. My house was decorated with clear furniture, and leather in grey and deep blue, not figural drawings.

One can't help but think this ceramic leaf design was heavily influenced by Tapio Wirkkala's laminated beech tray/ dish/ bowl which was '... proclaimed "the most beautiful object of 1951" by House Beautiful while on display at the IX Triennale in Milan...'
