Picked this piece up the other day. Very intricately carved and appears to be pretty old. I believe he is one of the Gods of Feng Shui. He does have markings on him and was wondering if anyone can read the markings. Really a nice piece.

Ha! That is a real ivory statue with neat Schreger's lines on the bottom, I began to be upset by people posting molded resin claiming it is ivory ;-)
I think it figures one of the 8 immortals (sorry, no time to search who for now).
Mark must be signature of the carver, but can not help more :-(

Thanks for the love Kyratango and Zowie. Agree, the bottom mark appears to be that of the carver. I believe the figure is of Luk of the Feng Shui but he generally doesn't have a stuff just the scroll. I would hope that someone can decipher the writing on the ivory. As for the Schreger lines, yes there are very nice Schreger lines. Now the question, elephant or mammoth. It appears to me again that the angles are greater then 90 degrees and possibly mammoth.

If there is a dead elephant that died of natural causes and someone takes the tusk and makes a figure out of it, what does that harm? This piece is well over 100 years old. There are many figures made from bone, tusks, mammoth tusks. How do we know how this particular elephant died? Why today are we here to define how the early cultures of Asia represented their culture? Did you know that the elephant herds are so big now in Africa that it is causing significant financial debt to the countries there to keep them fed? They have to cull the herds and in doing so, if there is a demand for ivory, wouldn't it be wiser to cull the herds and sell that ivory and re-invest the money to protect and feed the others? Sorry, I don't see how your response in any way assists in trying to identify this piece.

That is not what I was saying at all. I was saying that the herds today are having a hard time surviving and the Gov'ts can not feed them as it is costing them too much money. They have had to cull herds now. Why not take the deceased animals tusks to sell and use that money to feed the elephants and protect them from poachers, however, the answer was no the last time and that only increases poaching. This animal died long before you or I and there is nothing we could have done to prevent that nor do we know how this animal died. I was talking to a Chinese friend and he stated that the one symbol was mountain written in ancient Chinese from the Lishu period which would have been about two thousand years before we were born.
