I have a collectable ax/tomahawk that I thought was native american. In my endevors to know more about it I have been told by many dealers that it is not native american. Possibly New Guina, Phillipine, Guam or South Seas. I was hoping you may be able to shed some light on this for me. The head is 10 inches and the handle is 23 inches
That is what is called a socketed head on it. Most I have seen had a loop in the steel up toward the handle so you could tie the head to the handle with a small diameter rope. I have only seen them on display as artifacts. I am sure of the name and that should help in your research.
Thank you for your help. Can you tell me anything about where it might have come from or it's age? Is it considered a hatchet, ax or possibly a tomahawk?
Because of the blade angle, I would think that it is not any type of hatchet/ax/tomahawk. It looks more like something used for chipping wood or ice. Possibly a Adze of some sort? Does the metal blade come off and go back on with the blade edge horizontal
No the blade is permanently attached.
