This skillet has been in my family for generations. I am trying to determine the approximate age of it. It was passed down from my Grandma who would be 104 years old. I got it from my mother. She used daily until she passed away sixteen years ago. It is now my favorite skillet because of all the wonderful dishes she created using it. It is in great condition, but I am trying to find out the "true" age.
Italicized (slant) Griswold in large cross surrounded by double circles with "Erie" in straight block letters below. Some sources say this logo was used as early as 1897, while others say it was registered in 1909. In either event, Griswold apparently used this logo until 1920.
Just to clarify further - the logo was used as early as 1897 - it wasn't registered as a trademark until 1909. - Either way, your skillet is dated between 1897-1920 by the logo information and I can further close the gap to circa 1905-1920 by the size (8) and the pattern #710 markings - I would assume this was passed to your grandmother by her mother.
agh, if you know, when did the logo go straight up and down (not italicized)? I have a Griswold skillet also from my grandmother, marked No. 3, and at the bottom 709, if that helps. Thanks!

Thanks, TallCakes, I looked at that site, it didn't answer my question, perhaps agh used another reference site since he seemed to have more detail in his response? And actually not sure that it can be answered with the information I gave in my question. The problem is partly proportion. A small skillet makes a logo look large? So my logo isn't on the site, and then there's the question of the handle. My handle is hollow all the way, the others are hollow only where the loophole is at the end. A bit of a mystery!
Thank you so much for the help and information. I love this skillet so much. So many meals have been made in it. The main ingredient has been love. Whenever I use it I float back a little into a simpler time. I was excited to share the information with my sons. Some day I know they will appreciate it the way I do.
