My godmother just gave this little tiny delicate treasure. I really don't know exactly what this is. She unfortunately didn't remember. It's about 2 inches long and on the bottom, faintly you can see a mark. Unreadable. I kinda think it's a Kewpie, but who knows. I just know that it's adorable.

Adorable! Is it possibly marked Japan?
    2. wsmoni, 9 years ago
I really can't see the mark, and where. Over time it's wore it away, but you can tell at one time there might have been

      Thanks, really cool thing.

It really seems like a vintage maybe 40's? Made in Japan figure. They made some of the cutest and eccentric little figures. This looks like seal body maybe? I just love them. Someone might come along and know it to be something else :)

That's a great guess. The mystery continues...... I thought at first maby mermaid? Seal is a better guess. Are there similar made in Japan lil things? Would it be safe saying Kewpie?

It definitely is in the style of a kewpie, there is a doll expert member who will know more. I will do some searches and see if I can find anything...brb :)

You're awesome!! This is all so exciting. I have to say.

:) I checked through a bunch of pages--didn't see anything with a seal body, but if you google or eBay vintage Japan figures you can see the similarities...does the old worn mark look like black letters?

Like I said, it's so hard to tell without assumption. I'm going to journey out this creature. Amazing information you gave and bless you for your kindness

Hi I actually have same one it is a mermaid mine is from Germany and dates 1920's yours is glazed porcelain and eyes are painted more in style of Japan made . I would love to see mark on it . My Grandmother had mine which I inherited she always kept in a china cabinet and it is only a few inches long if that . I will put the post on your page of mine . It is not a Kewpie even though it has top notch on head . These were novelty figurines , They did make Rosie O'neill Kewpies in many styles but this is not one , It appears to date around 1940's and I am curious is glaze crackling ? Very cute

I asked about crazing because it is possible yours was made in a ceramic class years ago vs factory made by painting of the eyes . Could you post a close up of face and mark please .

Here is one a bit later than mine as mine was pre country of origin requirement
