Forrestal ... famous for her movies - every sailor watches her burn every year starting in boot camp. These were sold in the Ships Store and were optional wear. Not many bought them. Also sold were knives and Zippos with the ships on them. These are highly sought by sailors who served on them.

Also John McCain was a pilot aboard the Forrestal when she burned. (Vietnam War era).

What took you aboard and when? Tiger Cruise?

The fire was during 1967. The actually footage of the fire was required watching for Firefighting Training as it was the perfect illustration on what not to do. In those days there was only one fire party and they responded quickly but was obliterated quickly in a bomb blast. A hodge podge force of volunteers took of the fight quickly as well. Those are about the only two things that went right.

They were loading fuel and arms at the same time. BAD
There was a sailor smoking ... no smoking allowed while handling arms or fuel.
Sailors were loading bombs carrying by hand not with the proper equipment.
A heat seeking missile was being moved armed.
    There were sailors improperly dress.
One fire crew lay foam to put out the fuel fire, another washed it away with water.
Million Dollar Aircraft, not endangered by the fire, were pushed off into the sea.
I haven't seen that movie for nearly 30 eyars and I still remember it.

A lot of mistakes, but you could not have staged a scene that got the message across better. When you are watching the film and see a Fire Fighting Team spraying the fire and then see a flash of light and then all you see is a hose flopping around the deck and with no sign of the sailors that had been holding it before the flash, you know they are dead. No actors, they were real sailors, gone. Training becomes very serious then.

Forestall was nick named "USS Bad Luck." Not too many I knew wanted a carrier, and then the news only got worse if you found you were going to the Forestall.
