This little screech owl showed up one day last week and hung around for a couple days. As you can see he slept in the most odd ball places. That's the railing to the steps for my front door you see him perched on in those two shots. The wife was able to walk right up to him and take these pictures. I'm no expert in owl behavior but it was really weird... That shot of him in the tree is just before he skedaddled. We haven't seen him since. The first night he showed up I discovered him sitting on a trellis at the corner of the house eyeballing one of our cats as a potential meal....lol... Very strange!!

What a treat! We had a red tail hawk sit for a long time on our deck the other day. I sneaked around so he wouldn't leave. Thanks for sharing!

Jewels, Someone suggested to me that the raptors... hawks, owls, eagles and such... don't have as much fear of man as other birds. Not sure if that's true or not. Thanks for the love... You too Lundy!!!

      Hi
      toolate2
I use to work for 15 years for the Canadian Wildlife, for collecting data on the field for nesting birds in all north of Quebec, we edited a Book, and that so truth, Owl ,Hawk, Falcon and many others, are not afraid of human, that behavior cause there lost sometime, because,of bad Hunter, kill them for naturalization ,even one day I go to trial with a guy kill a Spotted owl. The story was finish in good way, i win for the poor owl. That's explain why your wife can go very close to this Owl.

      Regards

      Alan

I've had two close encounters with owl. One was a tiny Boreal Owl that was roosting in a barn after killing a sparrow, I was able to get within two feet of it to take pictures.
The other was a large owl that had hit the power wires in our yard & was injured.
We put it in a safe place to recover but it died soon after.

Wonderful pictures. We live in a city but have huge oak trees and home to owls every year to raise their young. I suspect this guy was looking for some lunch to take home. Earlier this year we ended up with two babies about three inches tall. Against the law to own them or keep them here so we passed them to a state preserve. They were fun but stinky guests for a couple of days. Our other birds were amused by them. The owls are meat eaters and we couldn't go there....except baked ham.

      Hi toolate2
What a great human interest story! I had an interesting encounter with a Screech Owl several years ago. While hunting small game, I came across a Screech owl setting on a stump. This one also had no fear of humans.
I realize now that is was dumb of me, but I had heavy leather gloves on , so I placed my finger under it's claws. to my amazement, it climbed on to my finger. I could feel the talons pierce the leather, but not enough to cut my finger. He must have just fed and had a stain of blood on his beak. I thought that this was why he was so docile. Now, how do I get him off of my finger? I walked over to a branch and slipped out of the glove. Upon the sagging of the glove once my finger was removed, he shifted to the tree limb. He was all feathers around a skinny little body. He weighed practically nothing.
What a wonderful nature experience that was. I will never forget it. . hotairfan

      Beautiful
      I love owl's
just purchased two little ceramic figurines for my collection of owl's.
But nothing like seeing one in person and so close up.
When I lived in NC on 30acres which 29acres was wooded.....I would see them all the time and that's how I fell in love with them. Thanks for sharing :)

Thanks everybody! I've been a bit hesitant to keep thanking people on this one as it is neither antique or collectible... I guess it falls more into the social aspect of this website. As a community of like minded people I think it's OK if we sometimes just share aspects of ourselves and our lives...pets...cars...etc... Isn't it???

Hmm, the tree looks quite old and the yard, well it's as old as dirt.

On my daily walk I pass three cacti that each have an owl sitting in one of the holes that Woodpeckers have made.

I live in the city, but a Red Tailed Hawk has been sitting on my back fence lately. Probably trying to snag a cardinal, sparrow, finch or chickadee that feeds at my table feeder. I have had screech owls and other small hawks hang around in the past. Sometimes my table feeder goes untouched for days as everyone moved around to the feeders in the front of the house to avoid being the eaten instead of the eater.

have you heard him screech? They can make a real racket!! i found one dead on the side of the road and sent it off to sacramento where it was mounted for an exhibit. The screech owls here in california are a little different - they look like this one if you squeezed alot of the air out of him.
