Every year a friends gives me a weird tool for christmas in hopes that I will not know what it it is. This year he finally stumped me. It is about 8 inches long and closes with the handle. It has all of these slides and is well designed. There are no cutting edges. Any idea what it is?

Ring expander to install engine piston rings.

I don't think it is a ring expander because when you push the handles together ( first picture) it gets smaller rather than larger which I think is how rang expanders should work. It is similar however and maybe there a way it would work for that. I am not sure we have a solution yet. Any other ideas? Surely someone out there has used one!

EJW-54 is correct , google search piston ring expander image and you will see he is correct, I still use this same tool on occasion.

Clay, If you had a ring in it you would see that it does work in the correct direction.

I stand corrected. Thanks for saving my sanity,
