Looks like an oil lamp, to me.
Oops, sorry, didn't read your title...I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. lol
I was told it's a whale oil lamp. My Grandfather had an extensive, museum quality lamp collection. This came from his collection. It was passed to my Mother, and now to me. Would like to know something about it.
I bought the same exact lamp at a garage sale in central NJ about 20 years ago... Mine has remnants of a metallic gold (or copper) finish on it. I've always wondered how old it is and whether it was actually used or just decorative.
Based on the holes at the sides of its base, I thought maybe it was used on a pole.
Mine is definitely marked 'JAPAN' (rather than Tapan). If you look at the inside of the chicken's "saddle," there should be an incised marking of JAPAN where the J is clearer than the stamping on the bottom.
I wish I could tell you more, but I have all the same questions that you have...
