There's quite a bit of social history and irony here. There were days when immigrants were welcomed and encouraged to come. In the 1880s the U.S. was looking for help in the mines of Colorado. Pueblo in the 1880s was the smelting capitol of the world with the huge Colorado Fuel and Iron Company. a shortage of workers led to a worldwide recruiting effort. This poster recently discovered in Paris is a legacy of that effort.
In the 1930s Canada had land to grow wheat and grow fortunes in the new world.
Today we build fences and encourage vigilantes. Oh, for the good old days!
