I bought this wonderful Ginger Jar in the early 70's from a man who was a retired navel officer. I believe he bought it in Japan. I don't know how many years he had it.

I was young and just liked it so purchased it from him without really asking enough questions. I've always been curious of its history although I don't believe it is that old and may have been mass produced.

It is approximately 10" high and 8" at its widest part. The rim has a few chips but the rest is in good condition.

Does anyone know what the mark on the bottom means?

Thanks for your research and response, Jim. I didn't know what Kakihan was until I looked it up. It seems almost impossible to know if there was an actual "artist" or it was something produced in mass.

I'll continue researching. If anyone can point me to a good website, that would be greatly appreciated.

I just posted it on Asian Arts Forum per your suggestion, Jim.

Thanks! I'll let you know if I find anything.
