Recently acquired large embossed metal trunk with original interior. I purchased this at a yard sale a few months ago from a gentlemen that had a garage full of trunks and I do mean full, trunks were stacked 5 and 6 high in places. A trunk lovers dream. He use to restore trunks for sale, but he was at the point where he wanted to focus on other things so he was selling off his collection. It was great to see a lot of young people buying his trunks, he was giving them tips on how to restore them and they were excited to get started on the restoration. I saw a new generation of trunk lovers that were delighted with their finds. I purchased this one and my daughter took one home to work on, she now has the love of trunks. She has two in her apartment that I gave her and will be soon adding a third. This beauty is 26 inches at the tallest point and 32 inches wide. My plan is to clean up the wood and use tung oil to restore the slats, but unsure how to clean the embossed panels. For the most part the embossed metal is in great condition, there are a few small areas with rust but nothing major. Looking for advice on cleaning up the embossed metal and what if anything should I coat it with?
Beautiful trunk with great pinwheel pattern! Nice to see an intact interior as you know how hard it is to find those.
Hi Kathy, great post. Neat to hear about young people's interest in these great old
trunks.Funny how, they have stood the test of time and always can be in fashion .
Once people really see just how they were made with no screws, all nails and rivets.
they tend to be amazed. Sometimes the cleaning is tricky, The clear coat is preference. Currently I have fallen in love with Zinger Clear Shellac.It does leave a shine though. but dries in 15 minutes.
Nice trunk, can't wait to see the pics when you're done and cool story too.
