This beautiful bottle vase measures 11 inches tall and could easily be Satsuma because of the highly detailed raised gilt, the birds and butterfly motifs, the crackle glaze and the spur marks on the bottom. It also is in three pieces looking at the inside. Unfortunately the mark is not Japanese and there are clearly western production numbers on the bottom. Does anyone know of where this could have come from or what type of mark is on the bottom. Thank you so much for any info or directions to follow.
It is beautiful! I would say it’s more Bohemian/German. I will see if I can find anything on the mark
Well guess what? I think it’s made American Faience Manufacturers, from the 1880-90’s and probably quite valuable! Here’s a link to an example showing their marks, and also a 4 digit impressed number. Although your mark is faded, I think it matches up

Here’s another link to the Brooklyn Museum with informayiom on Edward Lycett, the creative director of the company, which they refer to as the Brooklyn Faience....
I would recommend that you take this to a museum to see if they can identify it as one of his pieces, which would obviously increase the value

I’m pretty sure it’s the Faience Manufacturing Company of New York, Sean, but if Tugten can find out if the artist was Edward Lycett, the value would increase dramatically. The first link from Live auctioneers has a photo of the mark, which compares well to Tugten’s photo

It's been a puzzle for me, but I loved it's delicate intricate quality I was sure it was something special. Will certainly look into Edward Lycett as well as the Faience Manufacturing Company of New York.

If you are planning to sell it, I believe that Christie’s and Sothebys will be your best bet. You can send the photos via e-mail for free and someone will contact you if they believe it is something they might be interested in. Give us an update when you decide what you’re doing.
i have been trying to gather more information on this vase since there is no provenance. It might be one of Edward Lycett's earlier pieces because of it's simplicity. I have found no pictures of it but two references to a bottle shaped vase and to ivy and birds. Believe it or not maryh1956 I just saw one of his vases sell for $29.99 on ebay missed the sale by 10 days. After I gather as much as I can on it I will take your advice and send Christie's and Sothebys the pictures. Never have dealt with auction houses before but it sounds pretty straight forward.
