This beautiful painting of LT James Crawley RN was painted circa 1800 he became LT in 1799 ..he served in the Royal Navy during the napleonic wars ..I have photocopied letters that were on microfilm at the archives in Halifax nova Scotia where he resided and was born ..the letters are interesting I am sure he was quite the chap as he walked the cobblestoned lanes in Halifax also his voyages and battles were mysterious !
At first glance I thought it was a "silhouette" portrait!

Hi I will get on that for you..I went to the archives in Halifax and checked out the microfilm there were many letters he wrote to his mom and also friends during the Napoleonic war he lived in Halifax..seems he was born circa 1780..I had the archives photocopy the letters for a fee they were interesting..
If you don't have copies, then do you remember what microfilm so I could ask the archives staff to retrieve them for me? It might help me to rule him out so I look for another man to fit my clues. I wonder when he died, perhaps 1809?
I think this Lt James Crawley was a member of the "Crawley-Vincent" family that has records in the archives of Bangor, Wales at the university there. Those helped me make their tree. Lt James Crawley was likely son of Joseph & Catherine (Folkers) Crawley of Halifax. Catherine was widowed when she married Charles Rausch in 1810 in Halifax. Joseph's father Edmund mentioned his grandson James in his will. Does that sound right?

I am not sure when he died-he did not die 1809-he became LNT 1799-his letters were dated a few years later-he had an uncle James Crawley who served-so could be him!
