This 1919 Hercules engine caught my eye 15 years ago. I was at the right place when it came up for sale last month. The gentleman that restored it 20 years ago came to my house and we wired it up to an old automobile coil and it fired right up. It weighs 400 pounds and produces 1.5 HP. These single piston engines fire once every 8 to 10 revolutions. Engines like this were used for various jobs like separating cream and mixing cement. Larger variations could run sawmills. The Hercules Company went on to make engines for PT boats.

I love listening to these things run!

Thanks Walksoftly. Its a quiet little clatter with an occasional chug, very different then an old open pipe Harley.

They used the rotational mass/inertia to skip a cycle or two for efficiency...I think?
    4. walksoftly walksoftly, 9 years ago
They will fire on every compression cycle if they are under full load. The governor regulates the firing.

That sounds good to me kanuckster. The spoke wheels must weigh 80 lbs each. Thanks for looking kanuckster and fifties50s.

Isn't it great when something you have loved & wanted for years becomes your's by a switch in "fortune"! The castle spinning wheel I posted long ago was my best catch.

Art in motion. I call it 5D... because we can add sound and smell to the list. Just add wings and it would be perfect.
