The creator of this portrait was Constantine Cherkas (1919-2011) who was famous for his paintings but not necessarily his portraits.
In 1941, Mr. Cherkas married art conservator Kira Krukoff. On their honeymoon in Kiev, they were captured by the Nazis and sent to a German labor camp.
I love the haunting look in the eyes of this portrait. It is rather eerie in a way, but I am intrigued by it despite that fact. Initially, I thought that this woman may be the artist's wife but was informed that that is doubtful. Can anyone out there identify her? The painting came from California.

She's a beautiful subject with such gorgeous blue eyes. Reminds me of the actress Paulette Goddard, esp in some paintings of her, one is by Germaine Verna. Did you ever positively i.d. her

      Newfld,
No. I thought it was his wife initially. It seems several sitters were in the same dress. I will have to look up Goddard...TY!
