    Hello,

I purchased a stool with this wood on the seat. The lady who sold it said it was made from a tree that only grows in New Mexico. I thought maybe it was from a pinon tree, but haven't been able to find proof of that. Does this grain pattern look familiar to you? What do you think it could be?
    Thank you.

Could very well be pinon (also pinyon) wood. Normally it is used to make incense or to smoke meat. It is a softwood and your piece more closely resembles red cedar, although the two woods are very similar. Difficult to tell from a blurry picture. The grain of both are quite similar and both are very pretty when finished.

      Hi fhrjr2

Thank you for your excellent lead. I believe you are right and that the wood is red cedar. I have found several people on-line who have used red cedar to make bar stools and the look of the grain is very similar to this stool.

I posted a better picture for you. I'm sorry that the first two were blurry.

      Thanks again,
      K
