I bought this at Long Branch Park in Liverpool NY at a antiques/craft show a few years ago when I lived in NY. I have tried to remove whatever the blackened are is, to no avail. At some point I hope to add some blending/matching feet to the bottom to make it a more useful workstation in my tiny kitchen.

CindB, I actually bought it this way. You cannot tell from these photos, but somewhere along the way, many years ago, someone must have added these bits of wood to the bottom of the legs. The color and ear is just about the same as the whole piece now. I have moved with it 3 times now. My husband always leaves it for last so he can get a couple other guys to help him lift it. I would guess it weighs about 3 or 4 hundred pounds maybe?
Those blocks under the legs are there for a reason. Cleaning under one of these daily caused the legs to rot out so they were blocked. Easier to replace blocks than legs. The black can be removed but most people prefer to pay to have it done or they just dig out a belt sander and ruin it. Very nice piece.
CindB I just play my woman card???? fhrjr2 that is a very interesting bit of information and it makes great sense. I think I'll just leave the black.
If you are sure the black isn't black mold then leaving it is OK. Otherwise you might be well served to not use it for food prep.
I actually followed the directions of a local guy in NY who made butcher blocks and I bleached it, scrubbed it with an abrasive then I re-seal it a couple times a year with a bees wax mixture made especially for butcher blocks. No one has fallen ill so far!
