One of my favorite vases. I usually like more colorfully glazed pieces - this is the "exception to the rule" for me.
Large (14 inches tall), square-shouldered stoneware vase with deeply carved, naturalistic ivy on an architectural form. Glazed to give the appearance of weathered stone. This vase dates to circa 1895.
An essentially identical example was part of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's "Salvaging the Past" 2013 Exhibition.
Georges Hoentschel (1855 - 1915) was an interior designer with an elite international following. He engaged sculptor Jean Carriès to create Japonist ceramics for his more advanced clients. Much of the inspiration was drawn from floral forms. Hoentschel's talent and taste were officially confirmed when he was commissioned to design and oversee the decoration of the pavilion of the Union Centrale des Arts Décoratifs at the Paris Universal Exhibition of 1900.

Thanks. I have had it for over 20 years, bought it in NYC at the Showplace Antique Center on 26th Street - a very nice man, Earl Johnson of "Ensemble" sold it to me.

Great eye and great timing. Jason Jacques wouldn't take anything less than 5-figures on this one...but then again, he's Jason Jacques and can command that sort of premium.

Jason Jacques does command the highest prices. It is a little strange though that he can't seem to afford ANY clothes. Have you seen his advertisements where he is "wearing" nothing but strategically placed vases? I think these have replaced "Jason Jacques - Pot Dealer".
