Where did ESSO even come from? I hear that it was in a Standard Oil meeting that someone came up with the short "letter" version of abbreviation or ESSO and then it was decided to Brand the letters. We all know that ESSO actually really stands for Standard Oil Company and it is the branded name used all over Europe. We found these NOS porcelain letters a while back and decided to buy them and thought we would find a place to use them "later". Really? Later just never seems to happen anymore. Hmmmmm? Did it actually ever happen? Anyway the letters are still posted on the inside of our antique Texaco Station until "later" happens and we find a place to display them where they can actually be seen. Isn't it amazing how many different names Standard Oil has come up with since the 1913 Break up of the original Company? Now look at them. They are back where they started before 1913 only bigger than ever? So much for anti trust laws. Not that I care as they have actually been instrumental in a lot of good things and imagine how boring it would be for sign collectors if we only had ONE brand of signs! That would be the end of a great hobby. Keep on hunting! That's where the fun is.

There was a gas station on every corner in America, that means a lot of signs still out there waiting to be claimed:) Happy Hunting!!

Went to St Martin years back and found it to be beautiful. Agreed thwt signs and gas pumps are not going to be easy to find! Hurricanes and rust are the enemies! We have the same problem in Hawaii were we live part of the year. I did find a visible pump here in a guys garage a while back but haven't been able to buy it yet. Maybe this trip? What do you do there? Besides collect old guns?

Trey got it right about w gas station on every corner back in the fifties. I always wondered how anyone could make a living when the mark up on gas was only about 3-6 cents a gal. And thwt after giving FULL service, checking air, tires, water, oil and washing the windshield! Wow! Those were the days! I worked at one of those gas stations as a kid and greased cars, lubed them and put gas in them for about .75 an hour! Those were the days of "kid power". Kids these days can't change the empty roll of toilet paper in most families! What happened?

I also remember those days. LOL! I'm retired from something, - - I just don't remember what! Actually, 4 times. To fill the time & keep off the streets and out of trouble, I got into woodwork for some years, until somebody found out that I was a licensed A&P (aircraft technician/mechanic). Things snowballed until I got a French business lic. & work (sometimes) at the French airport on U.S. & Canadian planes. This is not fb, as they keep reminding me. My email address is on my profile. I used to have inspector's authorization, but have seen no reason to renew it. (too old to handle the computer skills needed). Bon nuit.
