I am posting this post -- as there have been times that I just could NOT see any marks on a heavy Glazed item. I could not see it, the camera could not see it. NOTHING!!
Over trial and error, I found putting the item right under a very bring desk lamp (like 2-3 inches away from the light) Might help. Sometimes it also helps on top of that to *add* in another light source in the form of a Flashlight too. See if that helps.....
Then on top of this -- Take some pics *without the flash on* as believe me -- the CAMERA CAN SEE MORE THAN OUR EYES SEE. Then also try taking some pics with the Flash on.
Sometime with the 3 light sources on it ( under lamp close, a flashlight close, Camera flash pic) -- the Camera flash highlight the darker colors under the glaze. It may only help you with a couple letters, but is all you may need sometimes.
Again -- by doing this -- I have been amazing what the camera can see, and we can not !!
Sometimes just worth a shot. The lamp I use is one of those lamps with a tube bulb

@katherinescollecollections -- thanks for the comment. Always worth a Try. With the light sources (bright and close) then using the camera with flash on sometimes helps the light get through the glaze and pick the inscribing below the glaze.

Great tip, but you have me wondering why the first item is Evangeline, numerous Canadian potters used the Canada mark, most of the Evangeline I have is marked as Evangeline? Just wondering
